What is Vedic astrology?

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is a 3,000-year-old system from ancient India that maps the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the exact moment of your birth. Unlike Western astrology, it uses the sidereal zodiac, which tracks where the stars actually are in the sky right now, accounting for the slow wobble of Earth's axis (called ayanamsa).

What makes Vedic astrology unique is its timing system. While Western astrology describes personality, Vedic astrology also maps when things happen. The Dasha system divides your life into planetary chapters lasting 6 to 20 years, each activating different themes. This is why Vedic readings can be remarkably specific about timing, not just character. Curious how the two systems compare? Read Vedic vs Western astrology.

Common questions

What is a Vedic birth chart?

A Vedic birth chart (Jyotish) maps the exact positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the moment of your birth using the sidereal zodiac. Unlike Western astrology which uses the tropical zodiac, Vedic astrology accounts for the precession of equinoxes (ayanamsa), making planetary positions astronomically accurate. It includes predictive timing systems like Vimshottari Dasha that map the chapters of your life.

What is the Dasha system?

Vimshottari Dasha divides your life into planetary periods (Mahadashas) lasting 6 to 20 years each, with sub-periods (Antardashas) providing more specific timing. Each period activates different themes based on which planet governs it and where that planet sits in your chart. This is why Vedic astrology can be remarkably specific about timing, not just personality.

What is the Navamsha (D9) chart?

The Navamsha (D9) is the most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology. Your D1 chart shows your current life configuration; your D9 reveals your deeper potential and who you're becoming. It's especially significant for understanding relationship patterns and long-term life direction. D9 themes typically become more prominent after age 30 to 35.

What is the Atmakaraka?

The Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree in your chart. In the Jaimini system, it represents your soul's primary lesson this lifetime. There are seven possible soul stars: Sun (identity), Moon (emotional security), Mars (courage), Mercury (communication), Jupiter (wisdom), Venus (love), Saturn (endurance), each carrying a fundamentally different life curriculum.

How accurate does my birth time need to be?

For a complete blueprint including Rising Sign (Lagna) and D9 chart, birth time accurate to within 5 minutes is ideal. The Rising Sign changes roughly every 2 hours, and the D9 ascendant shifts every 13 minutes. Even a 15-minute difference can meaningfully change house placements and life chapter timing. Check your birth certificate for the most precise time available.

How is this different from Western astrology?

Three key differences: (1) Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac, which tracks actual star positions, so your Vedic Sun sign may differ from your Western sign. (2) Vedic includes the Dasha timing system, which maps when life themes activate, not just what they are. (3) Vedic uses divisional charts (D9, D10, etc.) that reveal deeper layers of your chart beyond the birth chart alone. Full comparison here.

What is my nakshatra?

Your nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied when you were born, one of 27 segments of the sidereal zodiac, each with its own symbol, ruling planet, and temperament. It is more specific than a Moon sign (each sign holds two to three nakshatras), and it sets the starting point of your entire Dasha timeline. Enter your birth details above and your free chart will show the nakshatra of every planet.

Is this birth chart calculator really free?
